SPAM FILTER: October 1, 2003 the Daily Journal Internet Services added a Spam Filter to all incoming email.

PURPOSE: To flag potential Spam Email.

DAILY JOURNAL INTERNET CUSTOMERS: Potential Spam Email is flagged with '*****SPAM*****' in the subject line of your email. The body of the email is the spam detection documentation. The original email is placed as an attachment. If you choose to, you can view the email in its original format by opening the attachment. NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ANTI-VIRUS. ATTACHMENTS COULD CONTAIN VIRUSES THAT CAN HARM YOUR COMPUTER. THE DAILY JOURNAL HIGHLY RECOMMENDS HAVING UP-TO-DATE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER.

You can perform the following steps to further separate/remove SPAM from your inbox. Since the majority of our users use Outlook Express for their email program, these instructions are for Outlook Express.

1) Open Outlook Express. First, you need to create a folder called "SPAM". To do this, right click on "Local Folders" and select "New Folder". (see figure 1)

2) A box will pop open. Type "SPAM" (without the quotes) and click "OK". (see figure 2)

3) Now, you will create a rule to place all email labeled with "*****SPAM*****" in the spam folder you've just created (note: there are 5 asterisks in front and behind the word SPAM). This will keep that spam from going in your inbox with your legitimate email. Click Tools > Message Rules > Mail.

4) Click the "NEW" button. Check the box that says "Where the Subject line contains specific words" in the # 1 field (see fig. 3) and the box that says "Move it to the specified folder" in the # 2 field. (both highlighted in yellow, below)

5) In field # 3 click "contains specific words". Type *****SPAM***** in the field (see fig. 4) and click "Add". Then click "OK".

6) In field # 3 click the word "specified" (see fig. 3, above). In the window that opens, select the "SPAM" folder that you created earlier and click "OK". (see fig. 5)

7) Now, in field # 4 (see fig. 3) type "spam rule" to name the rule that you have just created. Now click "OK". That's it! You're done. Now, any spam email will be placed in the SPAM folder for you to delete at your convenience.
